Experience Rome FAQs

Here is a list of answers to frequently asked questions about the Experience Rome Downtown trip.

What clothes should I wear?

Dress for the weather and choose comfortable clothing and shoes.
Modesty is enforced in some areas, and is fairly typical in Italy. Cathedrals will not admit anyone whose shoulders or thighs are exposed, and will not permit hats to be worn inside. See http://www.vaticanmuseumsrome.com/dress-code-vatican-museums for guidance on visiting the Vatican Museums.
Blending in is one of your best ways to avoid being targeted by pickpockets that can be active especially on public transportation. Avoid cargo pants, hiking boots, crocks, clothes with big logos/lettering. Jewelry should be kept to a bare minimum. Some experienced travelers like to wear a money belt, or carry a theft-deterrent purse. When carrying a backpack, plan to wear it facing front when riding public transportation.

What else should I bring?

A small, empty water bottle. Rome is famous for its fountains, and their water is good! There are over 2000 fountains in the city of Rome, many famous. They’re easily found. Plan to hydrate!
A handheld fan during summer, or a small umbrella. Rome is crowded, so avoid bulky or expensive tools.
Rain gear is helpful.

What sort of walking should I prepare for?

You’ll be walking between 3 and 4 miles on some days, and standing most of the time. Many streets are cobblestone, so comfortable shoes that do not rub even on uneven surfaces are important. Avoid new shoes, and test whatever you plan to bring. And remember: Rome was built on 7 hills, so there will be some gentle slopes to tackle! We can assist if someone needs to take a taxi occasionally to our next destination while others walk.
If you are prone to blisters, it could be worthwhile to invest in mole skin (bring scissors), or just lots of waterproof bandaids (I recommend NexCare).

How should I expect for the meals?

Each day includes a continental breakfast, included in your enrollment fee.
All other meals will take place at local restaurants. Lunches can be as cheap as €10, dinner can range from €20 to €40 (or more…)
While it’s true that Italians do not order cappuccino after lunch, coffee tenders are willing to make tourists happy!
Gelato may be eaten at any time during the day! Many of our visitors, especially during hot weather, splurge on a gelato daily! Prices are roughly akin to those of ice cream in America.

Do I need to speak Italian?

Italy emphasizes foreign language education, so most Italians have some command of the English language. In Rome, attendants often prefer that you order quickly rather than in Italian. However, learning a few key phrases is a good courtesy.

Is this trip suited for a first-time tourist to the EU?

Yes! As one of the participants has noted, one of the highlights of this trip is the preparation for each destination and for culture itself. The trip covers practical aspects like queue etiquette, crossing streets, and navigating the metro, making it ideal for first-time EU travelers.
